The Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind currently employs more than 170 individuals, and over 80% of our Industrial Center's direct labor employees are blind.

The vision level necessary to qualify for employment in the Industrial Division is 20/200 acuity or 15º central vision.

Over the course of its 75-year history, the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind has successfully employed blind and visually impaired individuals utilizing various types of skill sets. Starting out with a hand loom and a few sewing machines, the Dallas Lighthouse began a local employment program. The manufacturing and sales of mops and brooms and repairing cane chairs were the tasks initially assigned to the workforce. During WWII the workforce made pillowcases and mops for the US defense industry. Eventually, more modern techniques were adopted, giving way to new processes and automation, enabling the manufacturing of an array of high quality plastic components and vinyl products.

Today, the Industrial Division of the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind is a modern 50,000 square-foot manufacturing plant and warehouse. Earnings among our workforce are above minimum wage level, plus opportunities to earn incentives.
