The Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired provides training, employment, and rehabilitative services that encourage opportunities for personal responsibility, economic independence, and social development for North Texans who are blind or visually impaired.
Our History
A courageous and enterprising blind woman named Eva Cameron established the Dallas Lighthouse in 1931. Operating for the first several years in borrowed buildings, the organization offered blind individuals jobs in weaving, chair caning, sewing, and broom and mop manufacturing. Ten years later, the Dallas Lighthouse received the building and the land it sits on as a donation. Today, the Dallas Lighthouse has grown from a tiny workshop to a 50,000 sq. ft. Industrial Center manufacturing various products and employing approximately 100 individuals. Products manufactured in the Industrial Center are sold under the Skilcraft and Touchcraft labels. In addition, we have a full staff of professionals who offer accredited rehabilitation programs for people with vision disabilities.
Our Financial Support
The Dallas Lighthouse is a private, not-for-profit, 501-(c)(3) organization, which is funded by its Industrial Center's product sales, memorials, tribute gifts, the United Way, rehabilitation fees, individual donations, trusts, bequests, foundations and government grants.
